Update from Winslow Wheeler, the editor of America’s Defense Meltdown: A Plan for President Obama and the New Congress. This book is published by Center for Defense Information (CDI) Straus Defense Reform project managed by Winslow Wheeler.  Recently some think tanks published through DoD their own recommendations for changes to our defense establishment, which appeared to do very little in turning the Titanic (as always).  Of course the people that push these safe ideas with brilliant sounding titles will get awarded for their obedience to the establishment with lofty jobs some where in the hierarchy of Defense. That is America today, led and ran by “cheerleaders.” (remember by the same people who gave us the financial crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and our energy crisis, “everything will be fine, don’t worry be happy.”)

I pray for President elect Obama and our country.  The first thing you need to do sir is just be honest with us.

We have a crisis in leadership. This crisis includes lacking the moral courage or strength of character to tell it like it is and then recommend a well thought out solution, while explaining to the American citizens it is going to take work to right the ship, but it can be done.  We all now need to unite, and support the new President, but in return, he needs to be honest with us and admit that the nation is in bad shape and can get a lot worse if we don’t fix it now. If he starts off with the truth, there is hope that we can once again become a powerful nation built on values and hard work.

The financial and economic collapse, our deeply flawed health care system, the gridlock in Washington, two long wars not going well, and long term, fundamental problems with energy and Social Security do not complete the list of raging crises the new president must face.  Add the ever expanding cost of America’s shrinking, aging, less ready military forces, now approaching the meltdown stage.  The nature of the problems our defenses face and the basic nature of some possible real solutions are outlined in a commentary I wrote for the November 3 Defense News.
