With the usual fanfare, the Obama administration has proclaimed a new strategy for the war in Afghanistan. On the surface, it does not amount to much. But if a story by Bill Gertz in the March 26 Washington Times is correct, there is more to it than meets the eye. Gertz reported that:
The Obama administration has conducted a vigorous internal debate over its new strategy for Afghanistan…

I cant find the link now ( maybe was on the BBC ), but yesterday I read that a lady member of parliament in Afgh said something on the lines of , dont send 30,000 soldiers , send 30,000 scholars or 30,000 teachers , because soldiers would just bring more fighting .
Apart from the obvious ( but wouldnt scholars/teachers just get shot ) I was puzzled by ‘ scholars ‘ . What did she mean ? Was that just a bad translation of ‘ 30, 000 wind turbine experts ‘ or ‘ 30, 000 medics ‘ or did she actually mean , scholars ? Scholars as in history , philosophy , religion ?
Just reminded me of the so-called ‘ Manchester Manual ‘ …in the first few lines I think said something about ” powers refusing to engage in Sophoclean debate ” as the justification for violence .
Huh ?
Anna,
What she meant is that it is going to take a multi departmental/agencie solution with the military making up one part to fix Afghanistan, which as I have said before is not fixable, at least within our budget unless all of Europe (NATO) pitches in, and that is not going to happen.
Again, thanks for your comments,
Don
