Tennis balls being passed around, how do we get it done quickly and efficiently? Deserted Island your stranded and can bring five items. What will those items be? This is how the Adaptive Leadership Symposium begand its lessons. Don Vandergriff using these simple games developed trust and cooperation betweeen approximately 40 individuals from various professions. You could see the intial uncomfortableness change to that of determination as communications opened and individuals began to take intiative to complete the assigned task.

Chet Richards talked about Col. John Boyd's OODA Loop and how understanding the concept and utilizing it can give an individual and organiztion a clear advantage in implementing strategy. Whatever environment we find ourselves in we can gain advantage through situational awareness if we have trust or better yet mutual trust in our organizations.

Col. Mike Wyly spoke of his experience of working with Boyd and in their reshaping of the Marine Corps strategy and tactics. His message was clearly "persistance", fight for the cause and stay the course. A message all to often forgot.

Dale Stewart talked about how we apply adaptive leadership in a crisis which he correctly defined as 'a testing of time' or 'emergency event' His term that crisis is characterized by "Un-Ness" stuck in my mind. Crisis's are indeed Unexpected, unsheduled, unexplained, unpresidented and unpleasant. When a crisis strikes it is time to go to work and decision making is key.

The collective knowledge of these individuals helped me to understand more clearly the concept of the Boyd cycle and how, leadership in an organization, when trusting, and continually willing to learn. That trains and empowers their people to do what needs to be done, based on a common cause is more fluent, creative and efficient. Why? Because decision's get made!

This was an outstanding class. I was honored to attend and meet each of you. The only negative i have. It could have been longer.I personally can not get enough of Boyd and the topic of adaptive leadership. This stuff saves lives!
